The award-winning Soar with Reading program is bringing five book vending machines to Detroit that will provide free books to kids all summer long. In research commissioned by JetBlue, areas of Detroit were found to be book deserts, areas where children and their families have little or no access to purchase age-appropriate books. The Hamtramck area of Detroit was found to only have one book for every 42 children.
To launch the program, Detroit Outfielder Justin Upton and actress Victoria Justice will help unveil the machines tomorrow, Tuesday(6/28) at 10 a.m. They will read to local children in attendance and help kids use the machine. The event will be hosted at the Matrix Center (13560 E. McNichols; Detroit, MI 48205).
Please note this is an invitational event and media must be credentialed.
