Detroit Men Open Up With Personal Stories

Fathers & Figures Friday, June 17th

DETROIT, MI –– The Secret Society of Twisted Storytellers will bring Detroit men who will tell true, personal stories of fatherhood to the stage at the Charles H. Wright Museum. The popular monthly event is one of 56 winners of the Knight Arts Challenge which funds projects that engage and enrich Detroit through the arts. The Society will strengthen and expand thanks to funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

"We are proud to support TSSOTS and their outstanding efforts to: showcase diverse storytellers and performing artists from the greater Detroit area; engage in cross-cultural, multi-generational and cross-gender interaction; facilitate community connection and pride, promote understanding, encourage positive change; and provide a unique showcase for creative self-expression for the betterment of Detroit, Southeastern Michigan and society in general." said Dennis Scholl, vice president of arts for Knight Foundation.

“As we listen to the exciting, sometimes traumatizing, sometimes uplifting tales, we think: “that could be me,” or “that was me,” says Juanita Moore, president of the Charles H. Wright Museum, which hosts the events.

“I ain’t seen nothing like it,” says Dick Gregory. “Stay in touch with the storytellers. It can heal.”

The Society’s next event “Fathers & Figures” will take place at 8:00 p.m., Friday, June 17th at The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Educator, Rodney U. Bellamy, Author, Dr. Ethriam Brammer, Ron Ford, Jr. son of late Parliament/Funkadelic performer, Ronald Ford and Master Metallurgist, Carlos Nielbock, will tell personal stories on the theme.
