Low Vision Center

A Low Vision and Accessibility computer is now available for use in the public computing area. Some of Microsoft's accessibility options are highlighted on the desktop. It is first come, first served. Please reserve this computer for use by individuals with visual impairments or other accessibility needs.

Adult Programs

Westland Writers Workshop*

Wednesday, Oct 10 | 7 pm

The Writers Workshop critiques individuals' writing in a workshop setting. All genres accepted. We will tell you what is working with your piece, as well as what needs improvement.

Writers Club*

Veterans Benefits Seminar*

Saturday, Oct 6 | 10:30 am - 11:30 am

This event will help veterans and their spouses learn about: benefits they are entitled to and how to apply for them; VA hospitals and how to register for benefits; financial planning for veterans; and national cemetery benefits and pre-planned burials. Senior Health*

Join Internal Medicine resident Dr. Subir Shah from Garden City Hospital for an informational talk on Belching, Bloating & Burping. Refreshments provided.

Uncovering the Hidden Job Market*

Join Mike Nosal of Reference USA as he discusses how to find jobs and connections you may have overlooked using more conventional internet methods.

Open Mic*

Thursday, Oct 18 | 7 pm - 8:30 pm

Open Mic at the library is back for the fall! Singer-songwriter David Boutetteemcees the night's festivities with the usual array of strumming, singing, and poetry reading. If you do any of those (or something else performance-related), it's your turn at the mic. If you like to listen to fine live music and poetry, please join us as well. Refreshments served.

Off-Site Event: NaNoWriMo Kick-Off*

We welcome all writers, non-writers, improvisational wizards to join the craziness that is National Novel Writing Month(NaNoWriMo for short) as we celebrate with a kick-off party and a novel-makingpep talk by one of the many friendly Municipal Liaisonswho volunteer for NaNo. Since our kick-off will be at our awesome local Biggby(37644 Ford Rd, Westland), we're treating everyone in attendance to a free coffee drink (one lucky attendee will receive a Biggby gift card).

The library will be hosting Write-Ins every Thursday in November (except Thanksgiving Day) from 6-8:45 p.m.

Computer Classes*

A variety of free, hands-on computer classes are offered every month at the library. Space is limited, so sign up at the Reference Desk.

Chess Club

Thursdays | 6 pm

Saturdays | 1 pm

Like to play chess? Come to the Westland Chess Group and hang out and play a couple of games. Bring your own board or use one of ours. Novices to chess masters are all welcome.

Job Seekers Lab

Tuesdays | 10 am - 1 pm
Fridays | 1pm - 4 pm

A librarian will be available to assist you in filing for unemployment, creating and uploading a resume and other job-related tasks.

eReader Support Group

Thursday, Oct 11 | 2 - 4 pm

Do you have an eReader? Want to learn more about it? Join us for a brief presentation on free ebook sites starting at 2pm, followed by our usual drop-in session. Come and meet with other eReader users, share your eReader expertise, or learn some tips and tricks for getting the most out of your device.

Gamers of all ages are invited to join in a celebration of International Games Day by playing board games, card games and video games throughout the library from 12 pm-4 pm. There will be special games for children in the morning.

Halloween Origami

5th-8th graders - Get in the Halloween mood by making some cool, slightly spooky origami creations. For online registration, please specify grade next to your name. Registration begins October 4.

Monster Make-Up

Wednesday, Oct 24 | 7 pm - 8:30 pm

Looking to go all out with your costume this year? Learn to apply monster make-up from Russ Kennedy of The Magic Theatrics Co.! Find out which make-up to buy and watch the make-up artist transform members of the audience into vampires, zombies, demons,and more!

If you plan on volunteering to have your face done as part of the demonstration, please have a signed parent/guardian form with you during the program. Forms are located at the Reference Desk and in the Teen Area or you can dowload it here.

Teen Book Club*

This month we will be reading Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco X. Stork. Book Clubs will meet in the Teen Area on the last Thursday of the month at 7pm.

Get zombi-fied and have a scary good time at our Zombie Prom. Dress up in your favorite zombie (or other monster) outfit,dancehave your tarot cards read, make a craft, and enjoy some fun zombie snacks (you'll have to see and eat 'em to believe 'em). Winner of the best costume contest gets a gift card. If you do not have a costume, visit the Zombie Creation Center.

Toddler Tales

Tuesdays, Oct 2, 9, 16, 23 | 10:30 & 11:30 am

This is an interactive program between parents/caregivers and their children ages 18 months to 3.5 years. Enjoy 30 minutes of theme-based stories, songs, signs, and vocabulary building with your little ones.

Halloween Toddler Tales

Tuesday, Oct 30 |10:30 & 11:30 am

HALLOWEEN STORYTIME! Oooohhhhh.....Feel free to dress in costume, but it is not necessary. We will Trick-Or-Treat at the end of the session! Toddler Tales is an interactive program between parents/caregivers and their children ages 18 months to 3.5 years.

Preschool Storytime

Fridays, Oct 5, 12, 19 | 10:30 am

Preschool story time is designed for an independent child 3.5 to 5 years old, not yet in kindergarten, who is ready to sit and listen to stories, learn finger plays and sing songs. Storytime runs approximately 30 minutes and introduces early literacy concepts.

Babytime Storytime

Saturdays, Oct 6, 13, 20 | 10:30 am

An interactive storytime which includes stories, songs, rhymes, and games geared especially to babies (birth to 24 months, with a caregiver). Older siblings are welcome too!  Storytime is followed by a playtime with interactive learning toys, puzzles, and music.

Halloween Babytime

Saturday, Oct 27 |10:30 am

Babies (birth to 24 months), caregivers, and older siblings... we invite you to wear your costumes to this HALLOWEEN Babytime Storytime! Enjoy 15 minutes of SPOOKY (but not too spooky) stories, rhymes, and songs! THEN... we invite you to TRICK-OR-TREAT at several stations throughout the library! Open to all babies and their families; no registration required.

My Book Buddy

Fridays, Oct 12 & 26 | 3 pm-4:45 pm

Do you love to read books? Would you like to read a book to a new buddy? Stop by the Children's Department for a chance to read to BUDDY, a certified therapy dog. Buddy will not care if you mess up, but he might be sad if you forget pet him! This is a drop-in program; no registration required.

The Westland Public Library offers literacy tutoring to adults interested in improving their reading skills. If you or someone you know is interested in this program, please call or visit Kristy in the Reference department.
