MCACA Budget: Senate & House Adopt Gov. Snyder's Budget Recommendation

Over the past two months, ArtServe has worked to ensure the adoption of Governor Rick Snyder's Executive Budget Recommendation to appropriate $6.15 million to the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA). In addition to working with legislators and other key figures behind the scenes, ArtServe has testified before Appropriations Subcommittees in each house in support of the Governor's recommended budget increase for arts funding in Michigan.

As of last week, the Michigan Senate and House of Representatives have both passed bills adopting Governor Rick Snyder's recommendation of $6.15 million for the MCACA in Fiscal Year 2013.

The MCACA's budget, which is within the General Government Budget, will now go to Conference Committee as the legislature irons out any differences. ArtServe is told that the Legislature is aiming to complete the entire state budget by the end of May. Know that ArtServe will continue to monitor the budget process as it continues through the final phases and keep you up to date.

AMPLIFY Gala for Excellence in Arts Education

On May 10th, ArtServe Michigan partnered with Michigan Youth Arts to kick off the 50th Anniversary of the Michigan Youth Arts Festival (MYAF) in Kalamazoo. The gala benefited the two organizations and was followed by the Welcoming Celebration in Western Michigan University's packed Miller Auditorium where ArtServe Board Chair Randy Paschke and President and CEO Jennifer Goulet presented the Arts Legacy Award to MYA Board Chair Daniel Steele and Executive Director Kim Dabbs honoring the Festival's landmark event.

The AMPLIFY gala and Welcoming Celebration was an inspiration with the rich array of student performances in dance, film, instrumental and vocal music, and theater which reinforced our shared mission to advocate relentlessly for the importance of arts education for all Michigan children. Inspiration Awards were presented to Regina Carter (instrumental music), George Shirley (vocal music), Garth Fagan (dance), Hopwood Dupree (film), Carl Magnusson (visual art and design), and Tracy K. Smith (literary arts). An amazing premiere multimedia performance of Strung with Glory composed by Mischa Zupko and celebrating youth arts and creativity was debuted and performed by 200 Michigan students.

Community Supported Art (CSA)

Community Supported Art is an exciting new model of investment that supports artists in the creation of new work, while establishing relationships with local collectors and patrons. Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture has become a popular way for consumers to buy seasonal food directly from neighboring farms. Community Supported Art is a similar endeavor, with the same buy-local spirit in mind, to support local art, artists and collectors. Artists are selected by a jury drawn from the area's art and food community to receive a stipend of $1,000, great connections to local collectors and promotional support. This local project is modeled on the successful CSA program in Minneapolis/St. Paul - created by mnartists.org and Springboard for the Arts and supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

The first pick up event is being planned for June 1, in partnership with MOCAD -  A limited number of shares are still available!

Creative Many Professional Practice Seminars

CMPPS has just come off the road after ArtServe's second "Planning for Success" in-depth workshop for students at Kendall College of Art & Design (May 16 in Grand Rapids). With this seminar, participants get an opportunity to do a short presentation introducing fellow participants and ArtServe to their creative practice. Following presentations, ArtServe's Director of Creative Industries, Cezanne Charles will present "Planning for Success", a comprehensive look at strategic planning for your creative practice. Q&A follows this session. We continue with a brainstorming session which includes "Barriers to Success" (what is holding you back?), "Communicating Your Value" ( a group writing exercise that helps the artist, by asking others to give descriptive words about the artist's work). We finish the workshop with a short session on looking forward into the future. Each individual is offered a 1 on 1 session to discuss, with Cezanne Charles, his or her creative practice more in-depth.

Lawyers for the Creative Economy (LCE)

Launching Fall 2012, Lawyers for the Creative Economy (LCE) is a new ArtServe Michigan initiative to establish a statewide network of attorneys committed to delivering free to low-fee intellectual property (IP) and creativity-related legal resources to artists, creative practitioners, businesses and non-profit organizations. LCE also will provide seven professional development seminars across the state for artists and other creative practitioners to help them develop essential knowledge about creativity-related areas of law. An LCE website, as the hub of the initiative, will provide valuable information and connections. Michigan Cultural Data Project (MICDP) celebrates its 2nd anniversary!

The Michigan Cultural Data Project (MICDP) adds numbers to the stories of passion and talent of the arts sector, to round out the descriptions of our impact. Hopefully, you have seen the Creative State Michigan report and website that illustrate the economic and social benefits of arts and culture activities in 2009.  The project that generated much of the data in that report was two years old this week! Here's the project's key metrics, 24 months since launch:

  • 650 groups registered
  • 551 groups have at least one year's data in the system
  • 88% of Michigan's counties (73 of 83) have at least one group in CDP
  • 88% of annual data profiles are available for research and comparison reports
  • 40% of groups entering data have budgets of less than $100,000
  • 60% of groups entering data have budgets of less than $250,000
  • 18 funders support the Michigan CDP and 10 of them require CDP to apply for funds

If your data is in - THANK YOU! And if it's not, it's easy to start, just go to the Michigan CDP website.  And if you have any questions at all - call the truly helpful CDP Help Desk at 877.642.3701, Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.
