Hanging w/Billy T, Minister Stephen "Sparrow" O'Neal, Tim Clark, DJ T.J., Mahogany Jones and Joel "Fluent" Greene after The Billy T. Show. Billy featured me along with Free Verse performers to discuss the event and the issue of functional illiteracy.
What a busy two months! I don't have space to tell you about it all, but two cool things were being featured on The Billy T. Show and The Lyrical Vibe'z Show with The Lost Rose in January and February respectively. I was also featured on the first episode of B in the City hosted by my buddy, Ber-henda Williams. I'm doing a brief series with the great folks at Oakwood Health System. This month and next, I am teaching creative writing at their learning center. Shared the stage with great acts like FluxPhonic, L'Renee, Urban Flow and Bandolero Duran during the WCCCD Performers Expo 2012! Also shared the stage with the pheonomenal Ami Mattison and that crazy good duo, Kinetic Effect at Thursdays in the D! at The Scarab Club. There was a lot of other stuff but the major highlight for me was performing with Marion Hayden at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) for the Tribute to Detroit Jazz Legends. This event allowed us to move full-cirlce. I first met Marion at the DIA in 2007 when we both performed at the DIA's Re-Opening Celebrations. At the recent performance I had the honor of performing a piece by the rapper, Crystal Clear (hence this article's title, "Hip Hop"). Even as I type this I am preparing to read at the Kresge Eminent Artist Dinner in honor of Dr. Naomi Long Madgett. How's that for a rambling list of activities? Whew! There is a ton going on and I am excited about it all! Thank you for your loving support.
black women rock!
Black women artists are inextricably woven into the fabric of Rock and Roll Music. During Women's History Month, The Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History and the jess Care moore Foundation will pay homage to this crucial aspect of history with the third annual Black Women Rock! (BWR!). The art exhibition, live music concert, and Sunday afternoon workshops and community celebration will take place March 16 - 18 at the Wright Museum.
The free Art Exhibition curated by Sabrina Nelson and jessica Care moore kicks off this year's event on Friday, March 16 at 6:00 p.m. The acclaimed BWR! live Rock and Roll concert returns to the Wright Museum's GM Theater on Saturday, March 17 at 6:30p.m., and features performances by Ideeyah, Steffanie Christi'an, Yahzarah St. James, Joi Gilliam (former lead singer of Lucy Pearl), Divinity Roxx (bass player for Beyonce), and Detroit's own jessica Care moore. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and tickets are $25.
The events conclude on Sunday, March 18 with a Community Celebration to raise funds to benefit Brave New Voices Poet Jasmine Bailey and Sickle Cell Anemia. It begins with an African Martial Arts Demonstration at 12 noon. An intimate Community Conversation/Panel Discussion with the performers is at 1:30 p.m. An Acoustic Concert rounds up the celebration from 2:30 until 4:00 p.m. The suggested donation is $10, but the Sunday activities are all FREE!!
