MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS AND SATURDAYS – 'Meet Scarlett,' a one of a kind program that actually can teach teens between 12 and 17, etiquette, because it's etiquette they see that they can use.  It is also a foundation for their social interaction in the future.  Monday and Wednesday classes begin at 5 p.m.  Saturday classes begin at Noon.  Call Jasmine on 313-965-8430 for details.

 

TUESDAY/10, WEDNESDAY/11 AT AND THURSDAYS/12 & 26 – 'JO': AFRICA TO AMERICA – A DANCE ODYSSEY' continues its triumphant return engagement.  It is a unique, fast moving lesson in anthropology and with live dancers, visuals and great music, JO! will have you clapping your hands all the way through the show.  Teachers, call and reserve a date for your class.  JO! is FREE for you to enjoy.  It is JO! is part of Artology, a cooperative program with the Cranbrook Institute of Science supported by the James L. and John S. THURSDAYS – Improve and expand your dance foundation technique with Fusion Ballet taught by Maya Stoval.  Schooled in classical ballet, she can help you improve with a variety of new music, dance/movements, and plenty of exercise.  Grow your ballet experience! SUNDAY 15 - Listen to the poetry of hostess Rhonda Welsh and other poets, writers and musicians and special honored guest, Detroit's Poet Laureate, Naomi Long Madgett  who will take part in the "Free Verse: Poetry + Music Celebrating Life + Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." event.  Each poet will perform an original piece or a cover about social justice.  3 p.m.  For more details go to freeverse@rhondawelsch.com

 

MONDAY 16 – Come to the opening reception for one of the most popular art exhibitions at the Carr Center, 'The Quilts.'  The theme is 'Made In Detroit.' Dozens of these true works of art created by members of the Lottie Elmira Quilters, will be on display throughout the building.  You will marvel at the designs, colors and the sheer amount of work that went into making them.  Meet the people who made the quilts and learn about 'Strange Fruit,' the quilt that took five years to complete and lists every person who was lynched/murdered in the U.S. because of racial issues, between 1865 and 1965.  Quilts on display through February 2.    1 p.m. 

 

EVERY TUESDAY – Curious about modeling?  It won't cost you much to find out about it at the Broaden J. Model Institute.  Come and see what Jamar Broaden can teach you about clothes, posture, skin care, makeup, attitude and more.  You might end up being a model…at the least, you can look like one.  Open to gents and ladies.  5p     Call 313-600-9156 for details

 

Just a few short ballroom dancing lessons will have you moving like a pro.  Dance master Greg Maddox leads a fun-filled, relaxing class that gives you the confidence you need to truly enjoy the exercise and fun of dancing.  6p   $5 

 

FRIDAY 20 - Enjoy a beautiful fusion of music, dancing and performance at the 'Stanford & Son, Black Tie & Art Auction Fundraiser.'  It's a celebration of the upcoming comedy stage play, 'Stanford & Son,' written and produced by Detroit playwright, Craig A. SATURDAY 21The Inside Out Literary  Arts Project  presents another session of – 'Scratch The Page,'  the student workshop and reading series.  Nationally known poet John Murillo, a New York Times Poetry Fellow, will conduct and intense, writing workshop for young poets who are dedicated to improving their craft..  Each student will then create a poem which they will present, side by side, with Murrillo at a special performance.    5 p.m.  Call 313-577-4601 for details.

 

WEDNESDAY 18 -  VIP Mentoring will host a monthly "A VIP Breakfast at the Carr Center"  every third  Wednesday thru June.  Guest speakers are Ken Hoffman/Little Caesar's, Amy Kaheri/Detroit Soup and Erroll Bomar,III/YUP Connect.  The discussions are designed to  bring  together people who make things happen in Detroit.   Complimentary breakfast.   8:00 a.m. 

 

FRIDAY 27 - The FELA exhibition is coming to the Ford Gallery.  It is about Fela Anikulapo Kuti, a Nigerian

social activist.  Through his music he was a voice of opposition against the tyranny of military-backed dictatorships that had tortured and murdered thousands of Nigerian citizens. The FELA exhibition will be on display  from January 27 through February 13 just prior to the opening of the Broadway hit, 'FELA,' at the Music Hall.  For details call 313-965-8430.

 

SATURDAY 28 – Come and celebrate the 1st anniversary of ' Unique Items, Antiques and Heirlooms, LLC.'  View the portrait artwork of Charlie Bolden featuring President and First lady Obama, enjoy the fashion show, comedian 'Double R,' musical entertainment, a special appearance by Darryl Cunningham, current holder of four boxing titles, and the refreshments.  3 p.m. $15/Adults   $7.50/6-17   One dollar from each ticket sold will be donated to PAL and The Northeast Guidance Center.  Call 313-424-8216 for more details.
