The Big Picture

In this week's Spotlight we feature "Mama's Boys The Big Picture" by Jerry Craft

Just Scratch beneath the surface of Mama's Boyz and Jerry Craft tells the tale of Black history. My 12 year-old daughter Samantha has read Mama's Boys books over and over. We take it along on road trips for a good laugh and learn a thing or two.
--Barbara Slate

We like the Mama Boyz books because Yusuf and Tyrell are really funny and interesting but they also teach lessons that kids can relate too. "Ma" really shows how school, racial opinions and health are important. These books are a "must read" for all ages.
--Sarishka (10) & Shriya (7)

We can't keep the books on the shelves! A great read for both kids and parents.
Marva Allen Hue-Man Books Cafe

Mama Boy'z was the first comic book I ever read. It was really funny but also inspired me in many different ways. I started to read it to my 9-year old nephew and he loved it too! I'd recommend this to anyone at any age.
Ijayna Barnes (18)

Jerry Craft
Jerry Craft is the creator of Mama's Boyz, an award-winning comic strip that has been distributed by King Features Syndicate since 1995, making him one of the few syndicated African-American cartoonists in the country. He has published two books, Mama's Boyz: As American as Sweet Potato Pie! and Mama's Boyz: Home Schoolin'. Look for Mama's Boyz: The Big Picture in early 2010.

Jerry has illustrated for Essence Magazine, comic books, greeting cards, book covers, board games and his two children's books, "Hillary's Big Business Adventure" and "Looking to the Clouds for Daddy." His comic was also featured in "Chicken Soup for the African American Soul."

Mama's Boyz has also teamed up with several organizations such as helping to fight childhood obesity with the American Council for Fitness and Nutrition, raise awareness of organ and tissue donation for Donate Life America, and increase support for the American Diabetes Association-- which earned him two Outstanding Supporter Awards. He has also won two African American Literary Awards Show Open Book Awards for "best comic strip" (2009 & 2004) and received nominations from the National Cartoonists Society and the Glyph awards. In June of 2007, he received a "Conversation Starter" award from the DC Campaign to Prevent Teenage Pregnancy.
